After 2015 I had a protracted mental breakdown. This resulted in years of intense unabated panic which overlapped horrifically with Cape Town’s severe water crisis. I ran away from myself to live with my sister in California but the panic followed. During this time I watched interviews with climate-aware people whose insights all pointed to one thing: there is nothing that can be done to stop this, so find somewhere with a natural water supply and try to enjoy every day that remains.

This is when I noticed a friend describing the permanent water supply from the mountains above her cottage in Swellendam. So, I came here with my partner Simon and slowly recovered, both from the psychotic panic and all the drugs I had been on.

This tiny ancient unspoiled town, below towering mountains gushing with water, provided so many idyllic experiences one upon another that I dubbed it The Afterlife.
